operating system not found, how do i fix. pcg-k215m
Either the Windows software is corrupt, the Master Boot Records are corrupt or your hard drive is faulty.
Do you see the Vaio Logo when you try to start?
Have you made a set of Recovery DVDs? If so what happens when you try to start with the System Disc in the drive?
vaio logo appears, on starting recovery disc it gets to blue screen then tells me the hard disk drive cannot be found. prior to this i had a system32 problem, i think this is behind it all but i dont know how to fix it

Sadly it sounds like the hard drive has failed and you may need to repace it.
You could try opening the larger of the two flaps on the bottom of your Vaio and checking the hard drive is firmly connected to its interface to eliminate a poor connection.
If you cannot fix it you may have to replace it. You need an ATA100 drive - something like this: -

After replacing it simply boot with the Recovery Disc in the drive and it should load the original software onto the new drive.
