Hi,
I have a VAIO VGN-A295HP with x-black screen. Recently I noticed diagonal streaks running over it; the streaks are mostly visible against a black background and look blusih. Cleaning with a microfibre cloth won't do any good. Any idea if there's a way to get rid of them?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Astrid
Sounds like a cleaning accident to me. I guess your conscience is clear, could anyone in your household or office have improperly cleaned it?
There are barbarians out there who will touch a display and leave their greasy fingerprints on it. Then even the microfibre cloth may be challenged and someone might get the fatal idea of using some glass cleaner.
Hi,
hmmm. I *did* clean the display, but with a cleaner especially made for LCD-/TFT-Displays (supposedly, I guess), and I even asked the people in the store about the x-black display and they told me I could use this cleaner. There 's no alcohol in in it.
So you think the damage is irreparable?
I didn't link the streaks to the cleaning because they look too regular and run all in the same direction..... not like something created "by hand". I also only noticed them when I started using the laptop outside, so I figured that they might as well have been there for a while (that is, even before I cleaned the display). But you think there isn't anything else that could have caused them?
thanks alot, Astrid
There are no stripes on the screen by design, so it must be something that came after manufacturing. However - stripes are really a broad term. A picture with a good digital camera would help a lot to say something helpful here.
Without that, I can give you the advice to exclude software and driver influence by looking at the display when it the Vaio is powered off and when it is in the BIOS respectively.
If it is damage to the filter layers on the display surface, you should be able to see the stripes when the display is off - maybe depending on the light and viewing angel.
If you can not see any stripes when the unit is off, switch it on, and have one finger on the F2 button. Press that button a few times when you see the Sony/Vaio logo. That should bring up the Bios. The good thing about that is that this gives you a rudimentary test picture without any influence of display drivers or windows settings that might cause problems.
If you do see nothing when the unit is off, but something in the Bios, try on battery and in different locations to exclude interference from the power grid or other devices.
Good luck!
The stripes are also visible when the Vaio is powered off, so I guess I *did* damage it when I tried to clean it.
I took a picture, but that didn't work well. This is the link, in case you want to look at it anyway: http://download.yousendit.com/0CDA71104643F759 One of the stripes is visible, but the pic is not very close to what it looks like in terms of color etc.
Anyway.... thanks alot for your help and suggestions. One more thing: what is a safe way of cleaning the display? I mean, even though I avoid touching the screen it does have to be cleaned sometimes -- and often a dry microfibre cloth will not do. What do you recommend?
again, many thanks
astrid
Clean it with a lint free cloth with little water
