hi i am a new viao user and was looking for some information on security. what is the best package to use and are any of the free ones any good. i am on a budget.

Have a read of some recent independent reviews of security products by PC Pro here: -

There are now four free products which are very good. Have a close look at: -

1. AVG Anti-Virus Free 9.0
2. Avira AntiVir Personal
3. Microsoft Security Essentials
4. Avast 4.8 Home Edition

They are all free. It is a matter of personal choice but I have listed them in the order 'best first' from my point of view. All these free products have no firewall - so you will need to turn the Microsoft Firewall on.

Probably the A-Listed Norton 2010 is a bit better at detecting new threats but it is not free and is a 'big system' that wants to control everything.

It is your choice but, for what it's worth, if I were a student on a budget I would pick AVG and act reponsibly on which sites you visit!

I haven't tried using microsoft security essentials yet but if you fell safe using it then that fine, recent reviews seem to give it 5 out 5, so you are not alone..
