Same line, different speeds from different companies??

My local exchange can offer 4Meg broadband speed, I live approx 2.5 miles away from it and have been quoted by Tiscali and BT that I would receive 2.5 to 3Meg at my laptop.

However my ISP, AOL, have told me only 1Meg is possible, worse than that I carried out an on line speed check myself and measured only 650K.

What's going on......is this an AOL problem, can they reduce speeds on the quiet??

I've been with AOL for years, and have recently moved to a new house where my machine is slow, and disconnections are a regular occurrence.
I live in a semi rural area.

What does the term splitting mean when refering to broadband connection??

All views and theories are welcome.......Cheers from Chunky

I have no reason to defend AOL but perhaps they are the only ones being completely honest with you.

I bet BT and Tiscali are not guaranteeing 3Meg - I bet they said "Up to ....."

The only sure way to find out is to ask a neighbour!!

Yes lol those magical words 'up to'

Are Virgin (cough, spit) in your area?

(I hate to mention their name after their classic comedy routine where they migrated my broadband to the same account as my tv and phone and in the process blocked my modem's mac address)

However I have been able to max out my connection with them.
