Hello,
I have recently brought a Sony Vaio laptop.
I am very happy with it. But there is one feature that appears to be missing.
When I try to record from the soundcard non of my software can find it.
It only records from the microphone.
I should be able to go to sound and choose ''what you hear'' or a similar setting. This will allow Nero Wave Editor or Audacity to detect the soundcard.
I have had both these softwares work on my old XP.
How can I record sound from my soundcard using my new Viao?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Although this was possible with XP, when Vista was released many computer manufacturers agreed to disable this facility - called "Stereo Mix".
I imagine this was part of an anti-piracy measure to prevent illegal copying of copyrighted music. Copying is only possible from the microphone.
As far as I know, there is no workable fix for this.

To hit Sony where it might hurt - I am sending out the following E-mail to all colleagues. Feel free to copy/paste and forward on to your friends.

Please be aware - for media prodcution, Sony Vaio laptops are rubbish -
VAIO CANNOT RECORD SOUNDS FROM THE SOUNDCARD
There is a Stereo-Mixer feature on all laptops which is usedd to record sound output from your speakers. Sometimes necessary when you might want to record music you have recorded yourself from videos you have taken, or Powerpoint Presentation voice-over you are capturing and converting to video.
Sony VAIO have purposefully disabled this feature permanently on all their Vista and Win7 laptops. I guess so to avoid people from copying sound etc from videos or other sources when playing them on your computer. Though legitimately there are many cases when you will be recording your own home-made sound output from your own videos, presentations, karaoke apps, or Skype style conversation recording apps, etc..
So it is not worth buying a Sony VAIO laptop.
