hi there,
im having problems using my modem. i keep receiving the error message 'Error 633'. i have scoured the internet to find a solution but have not been able to find one that works. ive reinstalled the modem several times, removed drivers etc etc but have had no luck. i know the modem works because if i keep restarting/rebooting eventually the modem works (eg today i had to restart my laptop some 40 odd times before it was eventually recognised!). i believe there is something wrong with the COM port. ive been examining the device manager and it appears that COM3 never appears in the COM ports list , even when teh modem is working - which seems a little strange (only COM1 and LPT1 appears).
is anyone able to help???
is there anyway of monitoring the COM ports and being able to force what device is being used on which port???
fyi: i have a sony pcg-fx802 running with xp
thanking you in advance
andy
Thanks for the reply but I've tried all the suggestions on that website with not much success: no other applications are running, telephone.ini doesn't exist in xp and the modem name is correct. I am also not running any synch software. It really seems that the com port isn't recognised when the computer starts up, is there a way to force it to be recognised or can i assign the modem to another port ??? Or any other suggestions???
Thanks again for you help.
Andy
I would reinstall the modem.
Mmmm, any other options? I've reinstalled the modem twice already.
Cheers,
Andy
A friend of mine had a similar problem with their Toshiba Laptop and came to me for help. I tried loads of things, checking for spyware, com blockers, viruses, updated drivers, recovered the whole machine with the recovery disks & even wiped the entire machine and installed a completely new version of XP Pro.
Even after that the 633 problem still appears, so I'm pretty sure that the internal modem is fried. My friends machine is now out of warranty, so they're opting for a cheap external usb modem.:smileyworried:
You have a point there Mr C, as it's an oldish model.
If you need a USB one then look at this one.
