Hello I recently bought a vaio VGN CR42s and i think its great.
I wanted to reinstall my own copy of vista ultimate 32bit on a new SSD drive (and remove a lot of the preinstalled nonsense that sony have on the original HD - nothing beats a clean install), and everything has gone great apart from the following driver which I have downloaded from the vaio downloads page http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/preinstalled/preinstalled.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&m=3264 here. There are no updates for it listed on the sony vaio support site either......
The only problem is, vista will not install the driver as it says its not for my OS. Now the OS has been updated, its fully legit windows vista ultimate 32bit with Sp1. Everything else is working, and ive even tried installing drivers from other sites for the texas instruments card reader (which is what the unit is) and it will not appear in vista.
The interesting thing is that the original installation hard drive shows all the card readers perfectly so there must be a correct driver for this somewhere! Anyone have any ideas? I mean i have the camera, vaio brightness controls and all the other things installed and its working fine.
I could obviously revert to the original mechanical Hard drive but id like to use my SSD drive with my own clean installation. It is kind of important I have the secure digital card reader working correctly however as I use it for my canon camera all the time.
nevermind I sorted it myself. I mounted the original hard drive in an external self powered chassis and found the "drivers" folder. copied it over to the internal SSD, and installed the driver in that folder manually via device manager.
It is NOT the same driver sony are offering on their download pages. the one on the download pages does not support this laptop. If someone on staff here could update that page with the correct driver that would be a massive help to other, less experienced users doing the same procedure in the future.
I am quite disappointed with Sony to be honest. great laptops but their driver pages, system and forum (why not use something good like vbulletin for forum software and turn on the search!).
