Hibernation

Hello once again. I have a problem that has just appeared in that I can not hibernate my vaio laptop. The facility for pressing shift to change standby to hibernate and the Fn+F12 does not work. I have been into Control Panel>Power Options but the Hibernation tab is not available there either! Any idea what has happened please??
Many thanks,
Gyron

Hi Gyron,

click Start then click All Programs and then click Accessories.

Then right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

If User Account Control pop-up appears click on Continue to allow the action.

In the command prompt window, type powercfg -H ON and then close the CMD prompt window..

Hopefully hibernation will now be active again..

Hi Thalamus,

thank you once again for your help - yes that did the trick. Bit worried what caused the problem in the first place though.
One thing I didn't mention was that when I have been trying to Hibernate a message as follows came up a few times;

"Windows - System Error Insufficient system resourses exist to complete tha API"

any ideas what all this means?

Thank you once again for your kind help,

Kindest regards,

Gyron

Hi Gyron,

what model Vaio you have.?

From what I can see the cause is linked to pc's running XP Sp2 with more then a GB of RAM..

See Microsoft's knowledge base article for more information: Knowledge Base KB909095

There is also a fix available but some people have stated that is doesn't help..

MS FIX

Hi Thalamus,

I have an early Vaio PCG-Z1SP with SP1 installed (deliberately resisted installing SP2 'cos of problems various people have had and also SP1 seems to work OK for me). The only upgrade I have installed was a couple of years ago and this was to add some more RAM so that I am now at max. of 1GB. The problem of Hibernation has just arisen for some reason.

Kind regards,

Gyron

Has the hibernation problem returned, if not let's hope this was an isolated occurrence..

Hi Thalumus,

Oops, just come off internet (all closed down) pressed Fn+F12 and got message as before;

"Windows System Error Insufficient system resourses exist to complete the API"

Hibernation feature vanished as before! Can't understand why this problem has just started to manifest itself - very annoying!

Ps, forgot to mention in previous mailing that I am running XP Pro.

Kind regards,

Gyron

Hi Gyron,

does this Windows XP Patch help: Hibernation Problem on Computers with 1 GB of RAM

Hi Thalamus,

Apologies for silence, but contracted a bug (human variety), which has laid me low for a while.

No, I have not tried the Windows XP Patch for computers with more than 1GB RAM yet. Before I do maybe you can advise me a little further please - I had thought about using the 'Windows XP System Restore tool' to go bck to say a month ago when I did not have this problem AND then maybe use the Windows XP Patch you suggest. What do you think?

I upgraded my laptop to 1GB RAM well over 18 months ago and this is the first time Hibernation has risen its ugly head.

Kind regards,

Gyron

It's worth a try, once you have completed the system restore I would wait a while before installing the Windows XP Patch to see if the system restore has helped..
