Black screen problem

I have an old desktop, PCV-RZ424 with a Sony display. Recently (following a power cut) I have problems with the display just showing a black screen. The computer powers up OK and momentarily the display shows the Sony logo but then goes black. Strangely when I power off the display and then power it on again, the display shows the sign-on screen fine, again momentarily, but then goes black again. Please help.

Can you borrow another monitor or connect to a TV?

This should tell us if it is a fault in the monitor or a fault within the computer.
