Just got my new SMP-N100 media streamer. All seems to work fine, but there is much room for improvement.
Here are my initial observations/wishlist :
1. Needs an option of selectable screensavers, visualisations or slideshows when listening to audio.
2. Needs more U.K. based internet content. BBC iplayer is great, but much of the U.S. widgets are pretty pointless. Hopefully that's in the pipeline though ?
3. It would be really great to have an alternative to NPR (National Public Radio) which is pretty grim. Hopefully Shoutcast or Live365 can be negotiated at some point which would open up a whole world of internet radio.
The SMP-N100 does have great potential. Hopefully Sony will bring lot's more updates and improvements soon !
I share most of your wishes on this product and would love to see album and movie artwork being displayed from our NAS content. I have taken almost permanent possession of my daughters itouch and use the Sony Audio Remote app to control playback of music from the N100 through our home cinema amp (saves having to put on tv to select content). Ironically that app displays the album artwork on the itouch/iphone (though not sure if it is what is saved on our NAS or whether it does an online look-up to be honest ?) and is much better for selecting tracks/playlists etc than the N100's own remote and interface.
After my initial excitement, I too was a little disappointed with the SMP-N100's out of the box capabilities. So I spent a while with all the Android DLNA apps I could find and (if you have an Android device) I can highly recommend the app from Skifta. Unfortunately no iPhone app is yet available. The Skifta app is a DLNA certified media controller and provides access to bucket-loads of content, including UK radio stations (BBC radio podcasts are available via the RSS channel). Here's the channels available: http://www.skifta.com/channels
Listed there is Shoutcast, as asked for by @Andy-Scotland, above. I guess some of the Live365 stations might be available via RSS, or via their own app (ElectricFM.com has such an app for example - though I've not tried it.)
What Sony could do now to make me really happy is enable volume control via DLNA. This ought to be a fairly trival firmware upgrade - if it isn't already enabled. Any thoughts on this please, Sony guys?
Thanks.
I use my SMP-N100 with Serviio.org dlna server, and now I have Video and Audio podcast and webTV.
But Thumbnails are not supported for DLNA video .
