Unable to record using a USB HDD

HI I have a new Sony Bravia Android TV KD49XH919 6BU.   I have a freesat box which used to record but has stopped working .  I’ve bought a Seagate 1TB USB HDD hard drive to record.  Still using freesat to obtain programmes.  The external drive has been recognised by the tv but I am not able to record.  It’s still trying to record to freesat box which obviously doesn’t work.  How do I overcome this.  Any help greatly appreciated.

And how does the TV know you have a Freesat box when you are running the TV directly from the satellite feed, much less try passing record requests over to it?

Hi I don’t understand what you mean.

Thats OK, I don’t know what you mean either. The equivalent of what you describe here is if I asked my Samsung TV to record, and it passed the request to my YouView box, instead of dealing with it itself.

I have just pressed the Record button on the Samsung, and this happens (albeit the TV does remain upright!) :-

As a further test, I started watching the YouView box on the TV, and then pressed the Record button on the TV remote. This did absolutely nothing, although not getting the message as above was a significant change; I think maybe the TV tried to pass the request to the YouView box, which spurned it.

(And this sounds maybe like what you are trying to do, getting the Freesat picture on the TV and then recording that on the HDD attached to the TV? Wouldn’t ever work.)

So what, exactly, happens on your TV, (as @Win_88 has already asked, to no response) such that it fires up and tries to use your Freesat recorder?

hi thank you for trying to help me (still can’t get itv hub either), we watch tv through the freesat as we have a terrible aerial signal here.  So I don’t know how to record if this is the only way to watch tv.

hi apologies for the delay in replying, we watch tv through the freesat so perhaps this is preventing me recording programmes using the HDD?

Yes; if you want to record, you will need to get these programmes via the satellite option of the TV, and not from the Freesat box.

Apropos of the Freesat box, have you tried a Factory Reset of it? This is known to restore the recording function to YouView boxes, as long as the issue is being cause by a corrupted hard disc, rather than anything else.

But Freesat is anyway coming to XH91 TVs, according to this:-

if indeed it is not already there for you; so worth investigating this, and seeing if you can record to HDD from it.

Thank you @royabrown2, I couldn't explain it better than that. If you want to record via the TV, you need to connect your satellite cable to the TV. simple as that.

Yes; or to put it another way, the TV will only record off its tuners.

In the old analogue days, I had a Panasonic DVD/HDD recorder that could perfectly well record off its AV inputs, which were SCART, and indeed, you could even set it up to make a timed recording off these inputs when it was hooked up to an analogue SKY box, likewise with SCART outputs.

I wish I still had it 😢

But of course that’s an absolute nono with HDMI inputs 😬
