Sony 50w829b burning plastic smell, red vertical line and white patch

  • My TVs just over 5 years old I noticed a burning smell to which I stopped using the TV. Few days before that all was working until I got the red vertical lines on one side of the tv with a white patch/dot in another corner of the screen which is very hot when touched. I've read lots of forums and posts and it seems like a manufacturing fault similar to Samsung TVs were experiencing few years ago and Sony TVs before that (late 2000s)

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and how/of they resolved it?

  • It also feels like a health safety fire hazard, so I've decided to stop using it. My concern is that the retailer and manufacturer will reflect the blame on wear and tear. The TV is still in mint condition since the time I purchased it.

Hi Siddiqur,

The most important thing, like you said you've done, is to stop using it straightaway. I'll see if I can get someone to look into this asap and you can also contact Sony Support about this.

Best wishes,

Pascale

Hi there,

I'd like to second what @Pascale_F recommended. Get in touch with Sony support as they will be able to give the best advice on this.

I called support centre who then referred me to the nearest service centre, their response is that they don't stock the LCD panel and therefore not much of a solution in terms of repairs. I'll be taking up with head office as I don't agree that I should bear the brunt of the costs due to an internal failure within the TV. I expected better from Sony customer services and more from company known for making quality products.
