I have a VGN-FW31J laptop with a Matshita UJ130AS Blu-Ray, CD-R/RW, DVD drive fitted. Overall, I've been happy with the laptop apart from the fact that I'm unable to burn CD-R or CD-RW discs from it. DVD's burn okay most of the time, and it worked fine on the 32-bit Vista that came with the laptop (seriously, Sony, what's the point of pre-installing a 32-bit operating system on a 64-bit machine with 4GB of RAM?).
I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and have tried burning CD-R and CD-RW discs using Windows, Media Player and Nero 10 - every time it's a new coaster. I've udpated the firmware, installed the latest updates (from Sony and Microsoft) but still nothing.
