Is it possible to change the region code for an unlimited amount of times.? At the moment there is a limit of 5 times but it would be good to know if this could be reset after the fifth attempt.

No you cannot reset the drive after 5 changes - the drive will become locked on the fifth setting made forever.

Two options: -

1. Buy a cheap external drive that you can leave on the second setting.

2. Google for 'Region Free' - As far as I know Region Free software and firmware is not illegal.  However, this is method is usually not possible on most Sony drives.
