Pressure on screen

I have a vaio vgn-fe11s and have noticed that when i touch the screen to clean it , just a little of pressure is enough to see that "strange shapes".

Could this damage the screen?

Should i just clean the screen with the laptop off?

I honestly don't know but to be on the safe side I always clean mine when the laptop is off.
