Hard disk LED always on

This recently started happening on my Vaio FE11S after I defragmented the drive. The LED is actually dim not the fully lit orange which shows the hard drive is really active. It seems to have slowed my laptop and also there is more of a fan noise. At least the clicking sound has disappeared for now. Anybody got any ideas on how to sort it out?

You must be doing a big task for this to happen, like unzipping, unraring, image processing, video processing, video playback (in some cases)

No, on the contrary, it's like that when it is doing absolutely nothing at all. In fact, the fan noise is higher when the HDD is idle then when it is working. Seems very strange.

Yeah that is a bit odd

Could well be a hard disk defect
