My experia M5 is ver slow on startup. It gives the message "optimising app 1 of 1". This goes on for a good 5 minutes.

"optimising app 1 of 1" i seeying often, even after repair of device with Xperia Campanion after disabling some apps. It's not bad thing, for me device working for this reason good. Why yours device start up slowly, it's hard to say, need to saw it. Maybe you rooted it? Modified software? Updated? What you did before your device started slowly?

All I did was updated the software and apps that required to be updated.
