Hi,
Can anyone confirm if the KD-85ZH (2020 model) supports the AV1 Codec, that is supposedly the Codec YouTube supports for 8K content?
Have tried a few videos meant to be true 8K but only seem to get 4K.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rich.
ZH8 uses MediaTek MT5893 (a.k.a. MT5598) according to displayspecifications.com which does not support AV1.
The MT5895 (a.k.a. MT9950 a.k.a. S900) is the first one to do so. It is used in XH90.
Appreciate your help, and typically not surprised to be honest.
2020 model flouted as a Sony flagship 8K TV, but not exactly future proof in using older chipsets.
Disappointed really..
It seems weird to deploy an 8K chip to the mid-range XH90, but only a 4K chip to the ZH8. 8K is still possible with ZH8, but only via HDMI and not apps.
XH90 however benefits from the newer chip as it can be used as single chip without a dedicated image processor, using the S900's neural engine for image processing. I assume the S900 to be quite a bit more expensive than the MT5893. ZH8 uses a dedicated image processor which makes the neural engine more or less obsolete. The downside of this design decision obviously is missing AV1 support.
