Built-in Chromecast doesn't properly play 4k

Last night we purchased a 4k film (Peter Rabbit) through Google Play on my phone, then played it through the built-in Chromecast support on the TV.  And guess what?  Just like iPlayer at 60fps (which doesn't work), and YouTube at 60fps (which doesn't work), it also stutters in exactly the same way described on the lengthy YouTube 60fps thread.  So I'm guessing that the in-built software Chromecast is trying to decode 4k at 60fps and fails too.

Is it possible to force the built-in Chromecast to 30fps, does anyone know?

I haven't tried watching it using the built-in Google Play App as for some reason that didn't occur to me last night :unamused: and now I've had a refund on it, I obviously can't watch it again.  I'm sure I've watched some 4k films via the built-in app so I guess this is also a word of advice - steer clear of the built-in Chromecast if you can!

Hi rgledhill,

Welcome to our community!

Have you checked if you have the latest version of the Google Chromecast receiver installed on your TV? This could be a reason why this happened.

That issue has been known for quite some time already (years?), see bugs on my trackers for Sony ATV1 and ATV2. It is like the initial YouTube 2.0 versions which also suffered from severe 60p stuttering. Google should apply recent patches also to the Chromecast player.

Hi Batee5,

Is there an internal Chromecast app I can check the version of?  Surely this should be updated automatically anyway?

@Kuschelmonschter This is still a problem on most of the Sony TVs; the stuttering is still bad on 50/60fps material...

Hi rgledhil,

Yes, there's a built-in Chromecast receiver app. You can get to it by going to Settings - Apps - System Apps and look for it. You can also look it up from the Google Play Store.

The Chromecast app (com.google.android.app.mediashell) is autoamtically being updated by the Google Play Store. Even latest version (1.31.11529) suffers badly from suttering when playing back 60p at resolutions higher than 1080p.

Couldn't find it on the Google Play store, but it does seem to be being updated automatically.

Same problem as YouTube and iPlayer then - it's incapable of 50 or 60fps playback...

Very poor for such an expensive TV.  My old £400 4k Panasonic TV did it fine.
