too many coasters....

Hi,

I have a sony DVD RW DW-D56A drive on my vaio laptop. When burning cds at top speed or below, the burn will go fine until just before the end when it will fail.

The same happens whether i use nero, recordnow! or windowsmediaplayer.

Any ideas?
I don't think it is the type of cd as i have used several different ones. I doubt its the program either, I'm really stumped and i have far too many coasters...

Any help would be very welcome

Hi Tom,

Sorry to be the prophet of doom but the DW-D56A optical dive is a real donkey, as a search of this forum will confirm.

There is a firmware update available on Vaio-Link, but I doubt that this will have any positive effect, also make sure that you have installed all updates and patches that are available.

I suggest that you contact support, assuming that you are still within the warranty period:smileysad:

try going into the drive properties, and turn the write spead down.

cds dont make too good coasters, they make a condensation ring in the hole in the middle

i've tried burning even at 2x and same prob

I've never reported a fault, is it best to go through the vendor?

Unless your machine is under two weeks old you will probably need to contact Sony Support. Check with the vendor first though.

use VAIO link for faults- this is definitely for when you buy direct from sony, i am unsure about retailers- should be fine though

you are within your waranty?!?!

i'm thinking of not bothering because of all the hastle and i need the laptop for work.

What do you reckon to an external drive. They seem to be cheap and then i could even copy on the fly!

Back to the fault reporting it's asking for a warranty /insurance contract warranty/insurance contract number> What's this and where can i find this from?

it may have been one of the booklets included in the box when you bought your laptop- mine was.

i dont have an external drive, but i have heard they are very good, and can connect in a number of ways; the most common being USB, and ime sure someone else can add to this

Hi Tom,

You don't normally have to provide a warranty number. Have you registered your Vaio at e-support ? Try this first. It is under a year old, isn't it?

It is normally a much less distressing experience to contact Vaio-Link by phone.

An external drive is an excellent solution as long as you don't want to play DVDs on the train!!! Much cheaper, often faster and more reliable. The only thing to remember is that you cannot boot your Vaio from the recovery discs via USB in the event you need to restore your system.

hi thanks for the help.

the drive is ok for playing cds and dvds. It's just a right pain in the ass for burning either. I am stuck using the old 8x cdrw on my old computer because this one is killing all the cds.

Will try phoning vaio support, but im really not keen on being vaio-less whilst they fix it.....

I had a similar problem and an external drive solved it and burns faster.
I did sort out the original problem but only by doing a complete restore.

I think it was probably a conflict of programs that did for me.
(And the version of Nero I was using)

Don't really want to restore again.....
As for conflicts, it's an idea i will try removing nero, and just use sonicnow! but its rubbish.

As for the external i'll look around and try and find a decent cheapish one, any ideas?

To resurrect an old thread......

I sent my laptop back on monday and it has already been repaired and is on it's way to me! top marks to sony.

They have replaced the old sony drive with a
MS01 ASSY ODD Pioneer (DVD+DL)(W)
Any ideas if this is any good(/better than the old piece of crap)?
