Backup/Restore of Recovery Partition (!)

I recently bought a FZ31Z Laptop and since I'm planning on installing a 2nd Operating System on it (linux), I'm considering my options regarding the whole Recovery Procedure.

Apart from the option of making Recovery DVD discs, is there any way to actually Backup (and Restore) the whole Recovery Partition ? Let's take for example the following scenario: Let's say I completely format the hard disk, erasing everything on it (including the hidden recovery partition), use Linux for 3 months and after that I decide to restore all of Sony's pre-installed software back.

I'm not satisfied with just making the Recovery DVD discs because we all know that DVDs do not live forever. I need a way of getting the raw data out of the hidden partition and putting them back on my will.

In the past I've used desktop PCs (coming from a different manufacturer) that also utilized a hidden recovery partition to restore the factory state. However, that other manufacturer provided DOS command line low level tools to dump/restore the hidden partition. And what I did back then was take the dump an store it on a RAID server, it was somewhat a bit more safe feeling for the whole recovery thing 🙂

I'm trying to find out if something like that is possible with the VAIO. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can back up a mirror of the Recovery Partition to an external drive or to DVDs using Acronis True Image .
