Nevermind guys, i found out why. The C2D has SpeedStep Technology, I installed RightMark CPU Clock Utility, and found that with my charger in, both cores are constantly at a core clock of 2GHz. When i unplug the charger, it SpeedSteps down to 1.2GHz maximum, to conserve battery power, and cooling the CPU down. Now i know that if i want to play games, i need to plug it in. I recommend this program quick and handy CPU diagnostic tool.

Theres not a day that goes past, when my FZ's CPU (2.0GHz C2D) doesnt reach a temperature of about 70 degrees celsius. Should i be worried? Im not really doing anything intensive, though when i play Command and Conquer 3, sometimes i exit to find my CPU at about 78 degrees.

My new FZ31Z runs very hot too. it takes about an hour of use but then the hand rests either side of the pointer pad, the keyboard gets very hot. The whole underneath area - especially near the battery, gets even hotter. This is my third vaio, and this one really gets much hotter than the other ones. I am speaking to E support about it, but so far nothing has worked.

I am speaking to E support about it, but so far nothing has worked.

Yeah mate you should find that it gets a lot cooler if you take it off of the AC, as then the CPU goes down to about 800MHz - 1.2GHz to save energy. If you leave it plugged in, the CPU cores are constantly at 2GHz, meaning its get hotter. Resting it on a hard surface helps, unlike me, using it on my lap most of the time. I reckon trying to find an extended life battery would help as the life on the standard one isn't up to much, so it's be on AC quite often.

re my FZ31Z heating up

Is the only way to test the temp by downloading some freeware? I try to avoid it if poss but the notebookreview page is asking for the temp and that looks like the only way.

I don't think I could keep this on my lap it really does get hot!

Esupport have told me to send it to them to check it out which I'll do in a couple of weeks, but gave no explanation as to the cause.

This is my 3rd vaio and unfortunately they've get worse and worse. not sure if its just been bad luck or really they're getting worse. Must confess I'm starting to look with desire at the mac!
