Firstly, I would search for an answer to this question but the search function's unavailable at the moment! I will keep an eye on it though...

Ok...

I bought a new Vaio VGN-NR21Z in May there and everything was going well, however, I noticed a problem after about two weeks.

This problem, since then, seems to happen for a few days every 2-3 weeks. The problem seems to stop after those few days, and the laptop will work flawlessly again for another few weeks.

The problem is that I hit the power button to power on, which the laptop does (the power LED comes on, HDD will turn for a second, system fan comes on), yet the machine will not boot-just a black screen (the backlight doesn't come on).

I have to hard reset the laptop, and (usually) it will power on and boot up normally with the next attempt, however the system time will have reset back to 2004.

Now, I understand this seems to be a particular problem with VGNs from general Google searching, but those searches have thrown up masses of potential causes and solutions. I wanted to ask on here before I have to go through a whole warranty case.

The time reset could suggest a wonky CMOS battery I know, the black screen could suggest some faulty connections there, I know there also seems to be a recursive problem with slot 2 memory in Vaios, or it could be that dodgy GeForce 8400 we've been hearing about lately...

I lucky enough to have a copy of PC Check that I'm gonna stick in my machine tomorrow which will hopefully diagnose if there's a hardware fault. I guess I'm asking here in case anyone else has had the same problem and has a definite answer they can share straight up.

Cheers for any help,
Si
