Sony α5000/ILCE-5000 flash issue

I have a α5000 that seems to be working correctly with the exception of the flash. I am able to extend the flash using the dedicated button. This activates a lightning symbol with a yellow ball next to it. I understand this to be the camera telling me that the flash is being charged. However the symbol remains on screen and the flash does not seem to charge.

I have gotten intermittent use of the flash despite this. Maybe one or two photos with flash after a charge. This is not reliable though.

I assume there is a seperate battery dedicated to the flash. Could this be failing? Is this user replaceable assuming I had the parts?

I have reset and formatted and am on the most recent firmware (1.10).
