To add:

There are several ways of keeping your data safe.

These are provided by Google as well as by Microsoft.

Sony user information can tell you more on this matter: Keep your content safe.

A tip for everyone:

This not only concerns pictures and other data, be sure to have a safe and unforgettable login to your device too.

You can for instance use the pin code of your bank card, sure your won't forget it.

You can try this: Remove the SIM card tray and set aside, then place the phone (without the SIM tray) in a container with dry white rice. The rice is supposed to help absorb the water, at least from parts of the phone that have exposure to the air. (EDIT: Be careful not to allow rice to get into the phone, of course!) Leave it in the rice overnight, at least. Perhaps it might start up the next day. -Or the next.

Did you have an SD card in the phone? If so, perhaps you stored some information on it?
