@dabasto98

Never put down to conspiracy that which you can put down to incompetence.

Sony would love all its customers to have a wonderful experience with their TVs, but it has simply lost the ability to provide this.

A grizzled support engineer from long ago told me that what they said of the sales and marketing people in their company (not Sony) was ‘You sell them the dreams, and we’ll fix the nightmares’.

The difference there, though, was that the customers were paying for ongoing support of mission-critical systems and saying ‘it will be in the next release’ wasn’t an option for anything that had once worked and now didn’t; you got a fix or you got a rollback, no arguments.

Sony have the same disconnect between ‘sales and marketing’ and ‘support’, and support make a tolerable job of fixing broken hardware, I believe, but when the problems are with the software, you are stuck waiting for the ‘next release’, instead of being able to roll back to a stable, working (or at least better), release.

The most useful, immediate, thing that Sony could do is support rollbacks, as all those people with SWF-BR100s will no doubt testify.

But that still leaves Sony TVs, behind their best-in-class screens, supporting recalcitrant software on inadequate hardware, and users paying the price for that.

As a (currently) all-Samsung household, I watch the constant stream of woes here with bewilderment. Just as I hark back to being an all-Sony household until 2012, when a Samsung beat out a Sony to be our new bedroom TV. And beat it out even assuming the Sony would have been as troublefree as the Samsung has been, which in 2012 it might well have been.

But no longer, with the rot setting in with Android in 2015, on a Sony TV we simply couldn’t live with. (It’s still going, mind; our son has it, and uses it with his Sky Q box, which it is an excellent monitor for, as you can then ignore all the other Sony gubbins on it).

Since then, I’ve still been around, defending the rather indefensible misfire of ‘YouView Lite’ on these sets, which still hasn't got most of the features that make YouView so good on the boxes, but does have most of the infuriating ones that I would like to see fixed on the boxes (catch-up apps working without an aerial anyone?)

But no more I think; the whole Sony TV thing is just too depressing 😢

So I’ll deal with any follow-ups to this, but after that, I’m off. I will take up an easier life, herding cats while nailing jelly to a tree..

Well, strictly speaking you are right, but I suspect you knife that the difference between an official statement and what is out there is minimal.

Sony's firmware update statement.

"In a first phase, this update will be released directly to eligible LCD models (ZF9, ZG9, XG85/XG87 and XG95 series)."

The second phase concerns OLED TVs.

Additionally there are statements from Sony staff to the effect TVs with the older SOC will not be getting the update as they are unable to get it running smoothly - a release of android specifically aimed at older hardware amongst other things.

So, yes, no official statement explicitly excluding XG90 but close enough.

Not quite sure what your reference to this being a community site and not a Sony one means? I don't expect a Sony staff member to come on and give a reply here, I was expressing frustration in a community environment.

Yes, BRAVIAs typically have an image (X1 whatever) and an application (MediaTek) processor. Even though those are separate chips, it is true that all X1 Ultimate based BRAVIAs feature the newer MediaTek MT5893 which will receive Pie (like XG95).

MediaTek MT5890 and MT5891 based TVs, like the XF90 and XG90 from this year, won't receive Pie.

Then Sony shall release a statement. I have enough experience with Sony and MediaTek and their support to be quite sure about it, also given the fact that kernel 3.10 is not supported anymore wit Pie. Sony won‘t say anything officially, just like with ATV1 where they also silently stopped support.

Hmm, that certainly gives some hope. Thanks for that. Otherwise it will quickly become quite the deception. I don't want anything over 50* so last year I finally gave up waiting for a 50" OLED and got the XG90. But the lack of transparency and updates was the first slap in the face. The second was when this year all of a sudden 49" oleds were announced... So an update would lighten the frustration a bit.

I am waiting on the official word for this too, if they are gonna do an update why not just be transparent and list the models planned! I can't see how they can update the XF and not the XG though they are very similar hardware wise.

Pie release is in NA region as well now, so hopefully not much longer to wait.

I can't see any problems with the update to a KD49XG at least as they are same hardware the XF

https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/downloads/00017061

Hello

well this update its not android 9 (Pie) it just have the setting menu redesigned and is still android 8... what a disappointment. they didnt even include the other redesigned in the input menu, quick settings etc or the small screen to view the current channel on the program guide. (something that every tv i had in the past had it..)

we just bought a very expansive smart android tv that is not smart at all and is full of problems, like with the sound if you use a soundbar ,lag , cant play 4k content from usb without stutter, google assistant and alexa is not working 99% of the time etc.
