I have plugged my two week old Sony Bravia KD43XG8305BU into a power usage meter, as I did not trust what it was doing in standby. How right I was to do this.

Sometimes, I come downstairs in the morning to find that the television is outputting up to 15 watts constantly in standby mode. This is usually, but not exclusively, when the internet router has been turned off overnight.

Main power related settings currently on my television are as follows:

---

Channel setup > Digital Setup > Guide setup > Update Guide in standby: off
Channel Setup > Digital Setup > Technical Setup > Auto Service Update: off
Channel Setup > Digital Setup > Technical Setup > Service Replacement: off
Network > Remote Start: Off
Network > Remote Device Settings > Control remotely: Off
Network > Home Network setup > IP Control > Simple IP Control: Off.
Network > Advanced settings > Built-in Wi-Fi: Off.

---

Anything else to try? When I took delivery of this product I was a bit surprised to find that it had an energy rating of B. After what I have seen over the past couple of weeks, I think the rating should be more like D!

Thanks for the tip, Pascale. Unfortunately, I already have reported the 'Audio only' nonsense in these pictures to the support team without getting a decent answer so far

Probably no point reporting this power consumption fault until I here something positive about fixing this other problem. I was just hoping someone might have seen something similar with the power consumption issues who may know why a TV that has an energy rating of B feels the need to pump so much power out in standby and wake up the sound bar attached to the optical output so frequently when it is 'off'.

Hi,

That's very odd, could you tell us how you measured the 15 watts?

Also, have you tried isolating it from any external devices (i.e. your sound bar) as well as the power mains for a few minutes?

J.D.

I have noticed that the Sound bar is woken up regularly by this Sony Bravia (possibly every 5 - 10 minutes), which my Old Panasonic tv never did in standby.

I am soon to take delivery of a couple of new Power output meters over the next few days. They should tell me more about the actual power output levels, just in case the current power meter is broken in some way.

Switching off at the mains is NOT a suitable solution in 2020. That is a solution from the dark ages of electrical appliance standby power management!

In fact, a few days ago, I actually tried that one night in disgust. I almost injured myself reaching behind the TV in the dark in the late evening. When switching the power back on in the morning, I injured my back. It is still injured.

What do I do now? Do I sue Sony for my back injury caused by the fact that for unknown reasons the TV keeps half switching itself in standby mode what now appears to be up to once every hour? Is it not better for Sony to fix their broken product which appears to have an energy rating more like D than B? Just how is switching the power off at the mains to save energy acceptable in 2020? How?
